Shootings in Orlando, Florida

This is hard to write. I am so angry at the NRA, the gun-selling merchants of death, and the Republicans in Congress, I don’t know what to say. Rather than comment, I think I will just list some facts.

  • On Sunday June 12, 2016 a man entered a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida and started shooting. He killed 49 people and injured at least 53.
  • The killer carried an assault rifle and a pistol.
  • Republican politicians who comment on this tragedy consistently fail to mention the words “gay”, “LGBT,” or “Hate Crime.”
  • Donald Trump blamed President Obama.
  • On December 2, 2015 a man and a woman killed 14 people and injured 22 at a holiday party in a rented banquet room in San Bernadino, California.
  • The killers had two pistols and two assault rifles.
  • On December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut a man entered Sandy Hook Elementary school and killed 26 people. 20 of them were children.
  • The killer used an assault rifle.
  • On September 13, 1994 Congress passed, and President Bill Clinton signed, a Federal ban on the manufacture of assault rifles for civilian use. The law also banned large-capacity ammunition magazines.
  • The assault weapons ban expired on September 13, 2004 because it had a “sunset provision.”
  • Since then, numerous efforts in the Senate, most notably by Senator Dianne Feinstein D-CA, to reauthorize the ban have failed.
  • Every time a mass shooting occurs, gun sales increase.
  • Assault rifles, which the gun industry prefers to call “Sporting rifles,” are the fastest growing product category in the gun industry.
